The 3rd Sydney International Tango Festival will be held May, 2007 !

The AUSTRALIAN TANGO FESTIVAL 2006 will be held in Melbourne in October !

Tango is Argentina's major cultural export and a key tourist attraction. Its inherent connection with Argentina is confirmed by the words of the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Alexander Downer: "We have actively encouraged Qantas to develop the 'tango route" to Buenos Aires... and it is great to read that the 'tango' is now six times more popular than Qantas's Los Angeles and New York routes."

In the last ten years or so, tango has made a comeback. Al Pacino danced it in "Scent of A Woman"; Madonna revived it in "Evita"; several tango shows, Tango Argentina, Forever Tango, Tango Pasion and Tango Por Dos, have been international successes. More recently, the movies The Tango Lesson,  Assassination Tango with Robert Duvall and Tango have added fuel to the fire.

Tango music and dancing is appearing more frequently in TV advertisements, including most recently Shakira’s tango for Pepsi Cola, and Juan Carlos Copes’ tango for SBS World Movies.

Tango tourism is thriving in Buenos Aires, with continued growth forecasted.  The Mayor of Buenos Aires, Anibal Ibarra, has plans to link the Buenos Aires Tango Festival (held every March) to the Rio Carnival celebrations as part of a whole tourist circuit: “Carnival is identified with Rio de Janeiro, we want Buenos Aires to become the centre of the Tango…We expect incomes for up to $10 millions.” (21/2/03, Hernan Etchaleco, Argentina Correspondent for Pravda).

The widespread popularity of Tango is demonstrated by a GOOGLE search (15/10/03):

·          3,180,000 websites use "Tango" as a keyword

·          90,500 websites are identified by the word "Argentine Tango".

·          6,540 - by the word “Argentine Tango Australia” (PATIO de TANGO is 2nd on the list)

·          4,300 - “Argentine Tango New Zealand”

·          2,970 - “Argentine Tango Sydney”

Tango is growing in popularity in cities and towns across Australia including Sydney, Melbourne, Perth, Brisbane & Adelaide, Darwin and Byron Bay. It is also experience significant growth in New Zealand. In August 2003 at a newly established Milonga (La Mariposa, Christchurch) over 350 people attended.

An increasing number of aficionados from Australia and New Zealand are attending Tango events and Festivals in here Australia as well as in Buenos Aires, Europe and North America. Over 200 people from Sydney have already registered for the World Tango Festival in Buenos Aires, held in October 2005.
