TANGO - Argentina's gift to the world. The very word evokes sensuality and intrigue, lust and provocation, raw energy and knife-edge precision. This most intoxicating of dances emerged in Buenos Aires at the turn of the 19th century. Born in the brothels and taverns of Buenos Aires, Tango was the dance of the fugitive and pimp, immigrants and country people drawn to the Argentine capital by its economic promise. For nearly two hundred years Tango has been the dance when it comes to expressing love. It is the one universally recognized duet that has conveyed in film and theatre to millions the complexity of passion between a man and a woman.
Argentine Tango is an intuitive and spontaneous dance which is created "in the moment" utilizing variations and combinations of walking, turning, stopping and adornments. As the couple moves with the flow of other couples along the line of dance, the man provides his partner with clearly marked opportunities for steps, figures and adornments of varying tempi, size and energy.
Bursting out of the salons and dance halls of Buenos Aires in the late 19th Century, the Argentine Tango has evolved into a popular dance form. In recent years the passionate music and fiery dance had a remarkable renaissance, a testament to the Tango's timeless ability to capture the imagination of lovers of music and dance around the world - erotic, seductive and irresistible! Like so many major cities worldwide, Sydney in Australia now also offers many opportunities for Tango social dancing.
The unspoken dialogue, as partners are responding to one another's expressive interpretations through the connection of their bodies, has led to the description of this dance being a pure form of communication - "a conversation without words". Both partners bring their own signature to the dance, which fuels the unpredictability of the experience. Even though certain rules must be followed, the dancers can never truly predict how someone will interpret the music, construct a dance or embellish it.
It really does "take two to tango", because to tango is more than just one leading and the other following. Both partners are important contributors - as with all good conversations. This quality may explain the Argentine Tango's huge current popularity, along with its ability to combine PASSION, SENSUALITY and ELEGANCE within one dance.
"The Tango is a feeling that is danced. It's not a dance to demonstrate ability but rather an interpretation of feeling. It is not just moving your feet and posturing. The Tango is Argentine, but it belongs to all those who understand its feelings and its codes." - Cacho Dante –
"Tango requires simultaneous surrender and .discipline." - Deidre Guthrie -
MILONGA: The Milonga is a Spanish dance first originated in Andalusia. As the fascinating music traveled the world it assumed various aspects. In Buenos Aires the Gauchos danced it in what is called a closed position, in the lower class cafes. Here their interpretation of it emerged into what today is our Tango. The Milonga enjoyed a popular resurgence some years ago through the Juan Carlos Copes group who performed it the world over.
The Habanera music and dance came from Havana, Cuba and made its way thru Spain to Argentina in the early 19th century. The Habanera and the Polka played a part in the Argentine Dance known as the 'Milonga' ("Poor Mans Habanera"). The Milonga originated as a song with lively improvisations and a peppy tempo. When this tempo was quieted down and steps were added to it making the Milonga the first known Tango but had not yet been named as such. However the Milonga was very popular by the 1870's.
Buenos Aires (Argentina) was founded by a Spanish expedition in 1536, then again in 1580. Immigration brought many French, Spanish and Italians to Buenos Aires. Buenos Aires went on to become a major city. In 1816 the Waltz was introduced to Argentina, then came the Polka, Mazurka and Schottische. Spanish and Cuban rhythms mixed and the Habanera was born.
