In 2001 Argentine-born Pedro Alvarez and his wife Sophia set up PATIO de TANGO, which has since become one of Australia's leading Tango schools.
Their 'close embrace' style of dancing Tango evolved from dancing at Milongas in Buenos Aires and extensive studies with leading teachers... e.g. Javier Rodriguez & Andrea Misse, Julio & Corina Balmaceda, Roberto Herrera, Fabián Peralta, Natacha Poberaj and Andres Laza Moreno. Sophia and Pedro are most inspired by the 'Villa Urquiza' style of Tango.
Dance has always been an integral part of Pedro's life; his father Florentino was a teacher of Argentine folk dance. Pedro grew up in Buenos Aires where from the age of 14 he worked as a waiter in a Tango Bar. It was there that he grew to love Argentine Tango.
Sophia's passion for Tango began when she met Pedro in 1999. She had previously trained in Ballet and Salsa. In addition to teaching, performing and running PATIO de TANGO, Sophia cares for their 'Tango Twins' Hugo and Valentina, who were born in March 2002.
Pedro and Sophia have performed at many Tango festivals and events across Australia, New Zealand and Argentina. And for more than seven years now they are organizing weekly and monthly 'Milongas' (Social Tango Dance Events).
Both are members of the UNESCO International Dance Council – CID, where membership is by invitation only to dancers who make a significant contribution to the development of dance in their communities.
"Because of the pleasure we've found in dancing Tango, we are enthusiastic and passionate about sharing it with anyone who wants to learn and experience the many facets of Argentine Tango.
We teach Tango as it's danced socially in Buenos Aires. Our approach is to help develop your own musicality and creativity within the codes and parameters of the Tango so that you can improvise and dance well with any good dancer from anywhere in the world.
As social Tango dancing is entirely improvised, we won’t have you memorising steps, as this is of no use at Milongas (Tango social dances). You won't leave our classes with just a few memorised patterns. Our aim is always to give you a better understanding of a particular concept and its technique, and to understand how it could be transformed into steps.
We teach how to give and read the subtle messages that enable improvised and connected dancing. All our courses reinforce the fundamentals (connection, musicality, footwork, posture, floor craft) which are the keys to successful Tango dancing. As skill levels increase, we then introduce more complexity, ornamentation and finer details.”
PATIO de TANGO classes are designed to have you dancing socially as soon as possible. Students are of diverse ages, backgrounds and nationalities, and are joined by their shared . . . Passion for the Argentine Tango.
