"Each
man has his own creation and when he takes a woman in his arms he is
inviting her to share an intensely intimate moment that may be
meditative or playful, joyful or sad, virile or tender, but always
suspended in time and theirs alone." -Robyn Ash-Rose, author of
'Better Times in Buenos Aires'

We've been
hosting the legendary Roberto Herrera and his new partner Tamara Bisceglia
for the past week. The Milongas and Workshops have been very popular
and their performances electric and inspiring. It's been such a treat to
have them here and a great injection to the Tango community.

Here’s what’s
been happening over the past months…

Tango at Darling Harbour
October
Over the long weekend of October we hosted an outdoor Milonga at the
Darling Harbour Fiesta and a week later celebrated our 5th Birthday with
a Milonga on 7th October at Club Rose Bay. Many thanks to all the
aficionados and students who turned up and warmed these events.

PATIO de TANGO's 5th Birthday Milonga
We recently returned from the Aerolineas Grand Tango Congress in
Auckland which featured Roberto and Tamara, Cecilia Gonzales and Donato
Suarez, and Nancy Louzan and Damian Essel – all brilliant dancers. We
were invited back to perform at the Congress as we did in 2005. We
enjoyed the Congress immensely and thank our sponsors Aerolineas
Argentinas.

Jan Rae’s exhibition launch,
Byron Bay |
September
We headed off to the Byron Bay Tango Festival, which featured the
fabulous Alejandra Hobert and Adrian Veredice. It was a relaxed and
friendly affair as the Byron Bay Festival always is. The highlight was
the Saturday Milonga featuring a spectacular show by Adrian and
Alejandra and the wonderful Brisbane based Tango Orquestra Tango
Paradiso. A lovely prelude to the Festival was Tango dancer-artist Jan
Rae's exhibition launch, where Tango Paradiso also performed.

Desert Tango |
a Meanwhile, Edgard Alvarez headed off to the Red Centre. He and Maree
Mowbray performed at the Wearable Arts Festival at Alice Springs and Edgard also ran some workshops there.
And last, but not least, Robyn Ash-Rose launched her great book on
tangoing in Buenos Aires at Club Rose Bay on 24th October. More on
Robyn's book below.

Better Times in Buenos Aires
- By Robyn Ash-Rose
"I read Miranda France’s
"Bad Times in Buenos Aires" on my third flight from Sydney to Buenos
Aires. As I read I
became more and more uneasy: she was not a dancer and had completely
misunderstood Tango. That misunderstanding went a lot deeper: in my view
she had missed the soul of Buenos Aires. If that was true, what was the
soul of Buenos Aires? The answer lies in the music: the city is drenched
in it, hearts throb to it, men sing it to themselves, eyes light up when
they talk of it, and Tango dancers play that music with their feet. But
they don’t play it alone.
In 2002 I spent a year exploring how this passion took over dancer’s
lives. I wrote a story told in music & song, dance & mime, then produced
it with the help of a wonderful band of Tango lovers. I even danced in
it too. All of this in Perth, the most isolated capital city in the
world. Two years later I made the pilgrimage to Bs.As. For all those
dancers who have also made it, only to wonder how they ever got to this
not quite sane city, in fact, how they got this hooked, I hope this
story will throw some light on why their lives have changed for ever.
And for me at least, also for the better. For newcomers, I hope those
insights that come from living here and communicating in Spanish, will
help them have better times too!"

"This is travel writing at its best, straight from the heart and
sparkling with interest. Very engrossing and enjoyable. Brilliant!"
- John Ellis, arts loving engineer, tanguero and DJ.
"WOW!! Captivating and most delightful to read! And some great tips!
The stories capture the essence of this remarkable place, the realness &
the 'surrealness'. Full of delightful surprises! Thank you for wonderful
paintings, imprinted now on my imagination." - Tanja Probst, tanguera and visitor to Buenos Aires.
"A breath of fresh air in the world of Tango! Well-written and
funny." -
Carlos Medrano, author of ‘Planeta Tango’.

Sydney Milongas in the month leading up to the Final. For more

Congratulations . . .
to our Tango students
Eva
Marie Prineas and Peter Titmuss who recently tied the knot in Greece and
tangoed at their wedding. May they live a long and happy life together!
TANGO DJ's . . .
Tango DJ's compose using music just as a
painter may create an image from a collection of pots or vases. The tanda becomes a new piece of art. Knowing the keys and tempos of the
pieces used in creating the tanda certainly can’t hurt. Unity and
contrast are principles of creation. Four tunes in a row all in the same
key could become tedious. Knowing the keys allows another way of
ordering the tunes to gain energy keeping the tempo even.
Going from A major to D major boosts a
bit. Going from A major to A minor is like a cloud passing over the sun.
G major to A major (The "truck driver shifting gears modulation") is an
energy "bump". D minor to F major is pretty subtle and very sweet.
Of course, just how modulations (changes
of key) effect emotion is highly subjective.
If you have perfect pitch and musical
know-how perhaps you can try to figure out whether our DJ’s follow this
idea in their tandas!

"The Sunday Practica at Step Up Dance
Studio was fantastic. It was the perfect opportunity to practice
everything I had learned i the classes in a relaxed atmosphere. The
social aspect is great, being able to meet dancers from other classes
and dance with them, as well as chat and hang out! The studio is
beautiful, and really feels like the perfect place to tango in,
especially when the lights went down at nine! The floor was a dream… I
could have danced all night!"
