"When you dance with a partner you are close and the dance is very suggestive, but it is not personal… Close is what the music inspires you to become. The embrace looks personal, but what we are actually embracing is the music." "I think those who say that you can’t tango if you are not Argentine are mistaken. Tango was an immigrant music... so it does not have a nationality. Its only passport is feeling...” - Carlos Gavito
We’ve experienced a month of mixed emotions… excitement and enthusiasm about the World Tango Championship… fun nights in Rose Bay … so many new students going to Milongas …spending time with our Tango friend and muse Diego Alvaro. We have some exciting events ahead with our charity Milonga on 6 August and the Libertango Trio returns to Rose Bay on 16 August. Sad news of the passing away of two Tango dancers - the Tango icon Carlos Gavito, and our friend and Tango student Silvana del Sole.
On the morning of July 1 the Tango maestro Carlos Gavito passed away after a long battle with cancer. Since the news there has been an outpouring of praise by Tango lovers worldwide for this great man. The world has lost one of the greatest dancers, but his memory lives on … “To me, the biggest irony of Tango will be that the most passionate milonguero I know, danced with the least number of steps. That was Carlos Gavito, the master of the 'less is more' school of thought.” “Never in a rush, always in a huge contrast to everyone else, he accomplished with so little what many could not achieve by whipping up a storm of limbs and torsos. His unique non-rushed style of dancing to a Milonga was an eye opener and proved that style, fun and energy can go along with a relaxed style of dance. The masculinity and passion that exude out of him are unrivalled.” “Play a pugliese and the Gavito inside every tanguero becomes alive. But Gavito's passion infection is like a double-edged sword. Its easy to forget the simplicity he strives for, his elegance and precision while trying to convey passion. Once you forget that you end up looking ridiculous. Of course, that's why there will only be one Gavito.” “We have lost one of the truly greatest figures the Tango will ever know. A thoroughly unique individual. His style, perhaps the most sought after in Tango, was completely his own. Carlos Gavito was a Master in every sense of the word.“ World Tango Championship
2005 Over the past month Tango communities across Australia, with the support of the Consulate General of Argentina, have been involved in the selection process to choose representatives from Australia to participate for the first time in the World Tango Championship held in Buenos Aires from August 12 - 21. In Sydney eight different Tango schools and organizations hosted Milongas featuring a competition selection round. PATIO de TANGO’s was on 2 July and we had seven couples competing. All went through to the Finals. Many people new to Tango turned up, which shows how much interest in Tango the competition is attracting. Included in the judging panel was Diego Alvaro of el Abrazo Tango, Buenos Aires, and Dianne Heywood of Sidewalk Tango, Melbourne. Dianne danced a delicious improvised Milonga with Diego followed by two dramatic and energy charged Tangos with her dancing and teaching partner David Backler, adding an extra pizzazz to the night!
The countdown is now on for the
national selection event in Sydney on Sunday, 17 July at the Sydney Opera House!
This will include both the final

Jennifer Bratt & Ney Melo Ney and Jennifer will be visiting Sydney in early September! They have trained extensively with Tango masters in Buenos Aires and are among the best of the new
generation of Argentine Tango dancers. Ney and Jennifer are regularly invited to
teach and perform at Tango Festivals and events all over North America and more
recently in South East Asia and Australasia. Their “close-embrace" Tango style
mixes traditional and nuevo tango. Ney is back by popular demand after his very
well received workshops in
February this year and we can’t wait to meet
Jennifer! You can find out more about Jennifer and Ney on their respective websites - www.close-embrace.com and www.neymelo.com. Contact us for more details on their Sydney visit. “There will never be a step, sequence or trick in Tango that will come close to matching the power of the embrace.” - Ney Melo
“Ney gave me new insights into basic principles of Tango dancing using visual
descriptions that made so much sense. It was SO EASY to grasp what he was
teaching me. The highlights from this experience were however way surpassed by
the experience of dancing with him. The only way I can describe the experience
was to use an analogy with the most luxurious car available on the market. If that
is a Rolls Royce then that was what it was like.” TANGO FESTIVALS . . .

- RECENT HIGHLIGHTS -
Scenes from 2/7/05 Milonga . . . "The ambience was positive,
refreshing and had great warmth. I enjoyed the entire night immensely - the
performances and the competition equally." "Dear Sophia and Pedro, it was lovely to see you last weekend. The Rose Bay Milonga was huge! Really good size dance floor, great people, friendly warm atmosphere. I thought you did a great job organising the competition, because it didn't stem the flow of the evening, with the milonguero dance pulse flooding the dance floor uninterrupted throughout the night! Fantastic night we really enjoyed ourselves! " - David and Dianne, Sidewalk Tango (re: 2/7/05)
Scenes from Diego’s workshops . . . "I thought that Diego's class last night was one of the best master classes I have taken and well worth the attendance fee." - Andy Hahn, July '05 Diego's Farewell Party at the Rose
