"No Tango is ever the same! Every dance is always unique... it is pure improvisation! You may know the steps in your head... but your heart tells you where to move." - Nito Elba

Every month we seem to start our newsletters with how exciting the past month was… and this month has been no different! There are always plenty of Tango experiences on offer in Sydney to satisfy Tango aficionados.

RECENT HIGHLIGHTS . . .

Sydney Tango Championship
The final round of the Championship staged at the Sydney Opera House on 12th June was an eagerly anticipated event. Tickets were sold-out in advance and the Studio was packed with Tango lovers from Sydney and interstate. A performance brimming with personality and razor sharp technique by the judges - Gisela Galeassi and Gaspar Godoy - received a standing ovation. Gisela and Gaspar from Argentina were the winners of the 2003 World Tango Championship in Buenos Aires. They are a charismatic and highly talented couple who charmed Sydney with their grace and energy on and off the dance floor. Well done to the winners, all the participants and of course the organisers, Susan Hargrave and Sharon Minahin for putting on a great event. It has certainly developed into the leading competitive Tango event in Australia, and we look forward to the 2007 Campionship.

Sergio and Loredana & A Night in Buenos Aires
During Sergio Cortazzo and Loredana de Brasi’s visit to Sydney in July they were able to fit in a workshop and performance at our Rose Bay RSL Tuesday Milonga. The "muy simpatico" Sergio and Loredana are beautiful dancers and we particularly enjoyed their warm and elegant performance at the show which brought them to Sydney... "A night in Buenos Aires" at the Sydney South Juniors Rugby Club. The show, directed by Melbourne based Tango dancers Fabio Robles and Ana Andre, was excellent. Congratulations to Fabio, Ana and all who performed in the show.

NEW SUNDAY VENUE & CLOSURE OF 'EL BESO'

We’ve found Tango heaven!

The 'El Beso Tango Bar' is no longer operating due to a decision by the Sydney City RSL to turn the dance area into a Bistro. Our last night there was on 9th July.

We’ve moved our Sunday classes and post class social dancing to a fabulous new venue in the heart of the city of Sydney starting 30 July:

STEP UP DANCE STUDIO
Level 1, 160 Castlereagh Street (between Park & Market St.)
- Not to be confused with the 'City Dance Centre'! -

Step-Up Dance Studio

The previous Sunday night Milonga after the classes is now a Practica.

About the new venue . . .
Step Up Dance Studio consists of one large dance studio and a mini studio making it possible to extend our Practica time to 4 hours!

Located in the heritage-listed St James Trust building, it has to be the most elegant and comfortable place for Tango we’ve encountered. Pristine, spacious (18m X 9 m) sprung wooden floor, old world architecture with high ornate ceilings, mirrors on every walls, air conditioning, first-rate sound system and acoustics. It’s a perfect base for our Sunday night classes and social dancing!

The street entrance door will be open 15 minutes before each class and the Practica. You will need to call us on our mobile number if you arrive outside these times. The good news is that the venue will have an intercom system in place in the future. The security / screening facility is in fact a bonus.

Complimentary tea, coffee and nibbles are provided and you can bring your own wine. (can’t get rid of this line)

Practica cover charge: $10 or free if doing a class on the night. The Practica is open to all Tango dancers. Individual assistance will be provided from 9pm onwards to students attending our courses.

Thank you to 'El Beso' supporters . . .
We apologise, on behalf of the RSL Club, for the short notice given for El Beso's closure. We’d like to thank everyone who supported El Beso over the past year, especially the Tango band Cambalache who performed there frequently. We had some fantastic nights there, some highlights being performances by leading international Tango dancers such as Roberto Herrera & Rocio Leguizamon, Jaimes Friedgen & Mariana Dragone.

'El Beso' is on the look-out for another Bar or Café that would like to be frequented by lots of gorgeous Tango dancers on Sunday nights. Please let us know if you know of such a place!

Cambalache Tango Band

  Dario (with bandoneon)
accompanied by
members of Cambalache

In Memory of Dario Palermo

The leader, founder and bandoneonista of the Sydney based Tango band – Cambalache, Dario Palermo, passed away on Saturday 1st July. Dario was only recently diagnosed with lung cancer and his health declined very rapidly in the last few weeks. It was a great shock to all who knew and loved him. Argentine born Dario was a talented and dedicated musician who was well loved and respected in the Latin community and amongst Sydney’s Latin musicians.

Jacinta Mcphillamy, violinist with Cambalache says of Dario: "Dario was a character! I never met anyone like him, and may not again. He meant everything to me as far as playing tango music, he was the sun and the moon and the stars, although I never got the chance to tell him."

His memory and dream will be honoured by Cambalache who will continue on as a band.

Analysing Nuevo Tango

When Fabian, Gustavo, Pablo and Chicho* (pioneers of the new generation of Tango) started teaching tango the way that characterizes them, they always insisted that all they were doing was "salon tango" they resisted the use of the words Nuevo Tango as descriptive of what they were doing. They also insisted with the idea that they had created no new moves. That all they had done was to analyse the traditional moves in all their components and all their possibilities and in the process they had resuscitated many steps long ago forgotten.

It was other people that persisted in calling what they were doing a different name: "nuevo tango".

What was new ("nuevo") however was their approach to teaching Tango. Traditionally, instructors showed the steps and made the student do exercises to achieve the necessary skills to do them; then the student would try to do the steps without fully understanding the mechanics of the moves. The Investigative Group approach was to analyse every movement explaining where the centre of rotation was situated, what type of walk was being done (parallel or crossed) who rotated around whom, utilized counter body motion as a lead, utilized certain moves such as sacadas very frequently, re-discovered, linear boleos, volcadas and colgadas.
- adapted from post on Tango by Sergio Vandekier

"Having tried both methods in my evolution as a Tango teacher I much prefer the investigative approach, which creates more fluid and confident dancers in the long run."
- Pedro Alvarez

* Fabian Salas, Gustavo Naveira, Pablo Naveira, Chicho Frumboli.

Their approach to classes, students and the dance itself has made the whole experience an absolute joy. CAPTION CONTEST

Winners of our caption contests win free entry to a Tuesday or Saturday Milonga at Rose Bay.

Congratulations to last month's winner: Richard McNulty

"Some people gain confidence on the dance floor by getting plastered."

This month's photo…

PATIO de TANGO Caption Contest

For those new to Tango... "Tanda" means a set of similar songs (3 – 5 usually) that are separated by an interval of completely different music (Cortina) to distinguish each Tanda. Dancing occurs during the Tanda. The Cortina enables dancers to get off the floor and change partners.

We welcome any nonsensical or provocative photos that could be used in our caption contests.

Lost and Found . . .
We have several women’s jackets left at our Milongas. If these could belong to you please call us.
