We hope that the start of the
New Year has been enjoyable and satisfying for you. We are excited about the
prospect of another year of Tango, which includes performance and teaching
engagements in Alice Springs, Adelaide, Auckland and Melbourne.
Over the past year the Tango scene in Sydney has really grown, providing more and more
opportunities and variety of experiences for Tango dancers of all levels, which leads to our quote for this month from Miguel Zotto in an interview
by Fabiana Basso (1994):
"At one time we had a project together with Eduardo Arquimbau and Copes to write
down a methodology of the dance; but we came to the conclusion that this is not possible because it immediately loses its essence. It is a social
dance of the people. What would be the point of having lessons with teachers if we all taught the same? That's the charm of the
Tango, that with
each person you find a different character and style." - TangoL |
Our main news for this month is that the
El Beso Tango Bar will be open
every Sunday from 22/1/06,
and it will also be another venue for our six week courses from 5/2/06 onwards.
We will continue to have live Tango music
in Rose Bay and El Beso. Cambalache will next perform
at El Beso on Sunday, 22 January.
We plan to continue to bring more leading Tango teachers to Sydney, including the internationally
renowned teaching and performing couple Adrian Veredice and Alejandra Hobert in the first week of September.
Read on for more on our upcoming events as well as some great photos of festive season
tangoing.

Pablo Ziegler & Christopher O’Riley
Two pianos for Tango
17 – 19/1/06
'Just
as a really suave tango dancer seems not to move with feet but on wheels,
Ziegler skates the keyboard.' – Los Angeles Times |
As part of the annual Sydney Festival, Pablo Ziegler and Christopher O’Riley
will join forces to celebrate the 'new tango' music of Argentinean composer
Astor Piazzolla.
Piazzolla transformed the Tango of his native land when he created
Tango Nuevo,
a fusion of classical music and jazz with traditional Argentinean dance sounds.
| |
 |
Pablo Ziegler |
Born in Buenos Aires in 1944, Pablo Ziegler began playing the piano at the age
of 14. In 1978 he joined Piazzolla’s New Tango Quintet and toured with Piazzolla
for the next 10 years. By 1990 Ziegler was combining Tango rhythms with
improvised jazz and has since continued to expand the horizons of "Tango Nuevo".
Boston based Christopher O’Riley is among the most versatile classically trained
musicians on the international scene today. He has interpreted and arranged with
critical and commercial success some of the most important rock music of our
time, including songs by Radio Head, George Harrison and Elliot Smith.
This January, Ziegler and O’Riley will perform some of Piazzolla’s
most loved compositions on two pianos. For more information visit

RECENT HIGHLIGHTS
Christmas Party, 18/12/05
El Beso
Tango Bar
Congratulations to the winners
of the Sexy Christmas dress theme - Laura Frost and Boris Feldman.
Thank you to Tony Leonie and
Beatriz Occhiuzzi for their Sexy Christmas Salsa performance.
And thanks to Cambalache who
performed on the night and have enthusiastically supported the Tango Bar since
it’s opening. Cambalache was joined by Damian Wright who is one of Australia’s
leading Flamenco guitarists. Accompanied by Jacinta on violin, Damian performed a
Tango duo (his own composition) that was quite mesmerising.
